…”Airports going the way of the luxury outlet mall”…”April 29: International Dance Day since 1962-introduced by the International Dance Council”…”Here’s the controversial new symbol of Canada’s 150th birthday”…
So much for park & fly, Vancouver will soon be experiencing shop & fly too as developers ready to open a 1st phase of a luxury brand outlet mall two skytrain stops away from the YVR airport terminal.
It seems ‘cobbled streets opening up into a piazza of cafes and outside seating’ are in the mix too!
Vancouver’s Scotiabank Dance Centre will host some ongoing International Dance Day events throughout the afternoon and evening today celebrating with ‘South Asian Arts & Bache Brazil, Discover Swing, Bollywood Youth Bash, Dance in the Park’ among other festivities!
“To the dismay of design professionals, the federal government has chosen an image crafted by a 19-year-old student as its logo for the 150th anniversary of Confederation.
Selected from 300 entries in a contest aimed at students, the winning design is a stylized maple leaf made up of multi-coloured diamond shapes. It will be featured in all Government of Canada products and events related to the 150th anniversary in 2017.”
It seems the design professionals generally think the design & branding of an event such as Canada’s 150th birthday is “a massive, massive project. It’s so much more than just a logo. There’s the imagery that goes in the background, the style of photography or illustration, the kind of language and storytelling that goes with a brand.”
For the most part, design contests initiated by governments seem well-intentioned, said Rod Roodenburg, a partner at Ion Branding + Design in Vancouver.
“Sadly, they only serve to underscore our collective ignorance as a society in Canada, and for that we should all be ashamed.”
And so it goes…
