UNESCO (United Nations Educational Scientific Cultural Organization) since 2000, has declared today the 21st of February as INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY (IMLD).
“A day to promote peace and multilingualism”. Interestingly enough, in Canada, British Columbia & Manitoba’s provincial legislatures passed proclamations to officially observe the day in 2015.
One only needs to walk Vancouver’s beautiful seawalls with a keen ear to learn quickly that residents and tourists alike, in their every day language, speak many other than English!
