Victoriadaycruiseshipmushrooms

“More Canadians cutting the cord to cable TV—subscribers numbers fall for first time”…”Canada’s manufacturers limping back to health”…”Of the roughly 8,000 types of mushrooms that grow in Canada, only a handful is carried in most grocery stores”…

Not alot of magic in ‘them there’ headlines!….

Just seven species—the white button, cremini, portobello, shitake, oyster, king oyster, & enoki mushrooms are farmed in Canada. As for the most commonly gathered from the wild—- morels, chanterelles, & pine mushrooms top the list!

The country’s gearing up for the “May long weekend”, originally called “the 24th of May long weekend or Victoria Day long weekend.” Monday is a holiday!

Traditionally the weekend for opening up cottages for the summer season, campers descending on provincial parks and campgrounds, and generally the welcome of the great Canadian outdoors being at the forefront of peoples’ minds. Gardners delight too!

In Vancouver, the weekend will be a buzz of many cruiseships arriving in port for the Alaska cruiseship season gaining full speed. Expect delays for taxis they say, as thousands head downtown from the airport to board their vessels!

Wherever you are today and this weekend, enjoy the kickoff to summer! May there be time for leisurely pursuits!

May Two Four weekend (urban dictionary)

Queen Victoria’s birth day, May 24th, is a statutory holiday in Canada and the first long weekend since Easter. It is the traditional weekend during which one opens ‘the camp’ (cottage), and signifies the start of summer (and Blackfly season) in Canada. The reference to ‘two-four’ rather than ‘twenty-fourth’ is a Canadian inside joke refering to the obligatory case(s) of 24 bottles of beer, or ‘two-fours’ required to celebrate the opening of the camp and to steel one’s courage against the blackflies and the mice that will have settled into the camp since it was closed in the fall.
“Did ya go to the Beer Store and get a couple of two-fours for camp? It’s May two-four, eh, and there’ll be a lineup!”

A Canadian one or not, cheers y’all to a great weekend eh!!

Ever so good. We are so amused.
