daffodilsHappy New Year!!

Vancouverites will gather later at English Bay for the annual New Year’s Day Polar Bear Swim!  Compared to other years, temperatures are mild–no doubt spirits, as always, will be wild!…

How was your evening? By all accounts CNN, there were fireworks around the world!

The days are short,
The sun a spark,
Hung thin between
The dark and dark.

Fat snowy footsteps
Track the floor.
Milk bottles burst
Outside the door.

The river is
A frozen place
Held still beneath
The trees of lace.

The sky is low.
The wind is gray.
The radiator
Purrs all day.

–John Updike

“January is named after the Roman god Janus, who was always shown as having two heads.  He looked back to
the last year and forward to the new one.  The Roman New Year festival was called the Calends, and people
decorated their homes and gave each other gifts.”
–  New Year’s Day

“To leave the old with a burst of song,
To recall the right and forgive the wrong;
To forget the thing that blinds you fast
To the vain regrets of the year that’s past.”
–  Robert B. Beattie, A Way to a Happy New Year

“What shall I wish thee?
Treasures of earth?
Songs in the springtime,
Pleasure and mirth?
Flowers on thy pathway,
Skies ever clear?
Would this ensure thee
A Happy New Year?

What shall I wish thee?
What can be found
Bringing thee sunshine
All the year round?
Lasting and dear,
That shall ensure thee
A Happy New Year.

Faith that increaseth,
Walking in light;
Hope that aboundeth,
Happy and bright;
Love that is perfect,
Casting out fear;
These shall insure thee
A Happy New Year.”
–  Frances Ridley Havergal, A Happy New Year

 Cheers to a 1st day of the 1st month of 2014 that’s 1st rate!
