It was on this date 77 years ago, in 1936, that King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne in order to marry “the woman I love”, American divorcee Wallis Simpson. A decision that changed lives in the Royal Family and especially that of current Queen Elizabeth II.
After his announcement, Edward “left Britain to join Simpson at a villa on the Cote d’Azur. They would marry on June 3, 1937. Except for a spell in the Bahamas during World War II, he lived the rest of his life in France.”
How often in a day do we make decisions or judgement calls that might be considered departures from the norm? One only needs to read the headlines each day to realize that variations on a theme seems to be the way of the world!…
Perhaps it’s the wide spectrum of what constitutes “normality” that can be so conflicting and loaded with mixed signals. Confusions and misunderstandings, hurts and disappointments, acceptances and denials, joys and sorrows, are all part of the day to day paths we walk, sometimes as if we are walking on eggshells so as not to be misconstrued.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not intending this post to be “too heavy.”
“It was once said that “the only normal people are the ones you don’t know very well!” –Ancis
“There are no norms. All people are exceptions to a rule that doesn’t exist.” –Pessoa
“I have a strange illusion quite often. I think I’ve become deaf. I have to make a little noise to prove I’m not. I clear my throat to show myself that everything is normal. It’s like the little Japanese girl they found in the ruins of Hiroshima. Everything dead; and she was singing to her doll.” –Fowles
