…trees…

Never to be told was a proud father’s story about his gifted son who from a very young age, would rise on Christmas morning in song singing “O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree, how lovely are thy branches!”……he would go on in life to a very rewarding career in banking!….

Those of us who are blessed to live in British Columbia and many visitors alike, treasure the beauty of our province’s trees.  From the old-growth Doulgas firs of Vancouver Island’s Cathedral Grove to the more easily accessible Stanley Park in Vancouver & the Baden Powell Trail that traverses the city’s North Shore Mountains.  Beauty in winter, spring, summer & fall!

The trees stand tall beckoning life–live it, one & all!

Trees bear fruit!

Leaves of trees, like many nations through time, rise & fall, & rise again!….

Trees are a life line. Oxygenation, love in action of the Creator in Eastern traditions…

Spruce, pine or fir, the evergreen conifer are the most popular Christmas trees.  In earlier traditions, often decorated with edibles such as apples, nuts, or dates, later, by candles and since the invention of electricity, by Christmas lights!….

As many singers know, the popular “O Tannenbaum” or “O Christmas Tree” might lead one to think “tannenbaum” means “Christmas tree” when in fact is means “fir tree”, the word for Christmas tree in German actually being “Weihnachtsbaum.”

Tonight at 5:30pm at Vancouver’s Jack Poole Plaza, home of the 2010 Olympic flame cauldron, will be the Celebration of the Lighting of the City of Vancouver’s Christmas tree!  A public family event with holiday treats and festivities for all!

As Christmas trees are decorated and lit around the world, in public spaces and in the privacy of homes, may their glow and dazzle this year also remind us of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, “rolihlahla” meaning “pulling the branch of the tree” in a sense, I believe, one who, shakes & shook things up for hope, peace, joy and love in our world!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree!
How are thy leaves so verdant!
Not only in the summertime,
But even in winter is thy prime.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How are thy leaves so verdant!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure dost thou bring me!
For ev’ry year the Christmas tree,
Brings to us all both joy and glee.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Much pleasure dost thou bring me!

O Christmas tree, O Cristmas tree,
How lovely are thy branches!
Not only green when summer’s here
But in the coldest time of year.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How lovely are thy branches!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How sturdy God hath made thee!
Thou bidds’t us all place faithfully
Our trust in God, unchangingly!
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
How sturdy God hath made thee!

O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Thy candles shine out brightly!
Each bough doth hold its tiny light,
That makes each toy to sparkle bright.
O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree,
Thy candles shine out brightly!

Cheers to a Friday and festive season of standing tall, reaching for the stars, shaking a few branches, keeping our hearts & minds open to all things about life & may we never stop growing!….
